The Roots Rider Flux is a long-tail cargo electric bike: a step-through frame with an extended rear deck built to carry people, not just bags. Total capacity is 440 lb, of which 180 lb sits on the rear deck — enough for two children on the bench, or one adult passenger. At 72 inches long it parks like a normal bike, and the 20 x 2.4 in tyres keep it manageable in traffic. It is the bike we recommend when the answer to "could you take the kids?" has to be yes.

The deck is the whole point

Most e-bikes that claim to carry a passenger are ordinary bikes with a rack bolted on afterwards, rated for 25 to 55 lb. The Flux is a long-tail: the deck is part of the frame, it runs the length of the rear wheel, and it is rated for 180 lb.

That is the difference between carrying a child and carrying two children, or an adult. The wooden footboards fold out on both sides so a passenger has somewhere to put their feet — riding with legs dangling near a spinning wheel is how people get hurt.

What the rear deck actually carries

The 180 lb figure is the deck alone. The 440 lb total payload is everything the bike carries at once: you, your passengers, and whatever is in the baskets.

180 lb long-tail deck, 72 in overall The deck takes, on the frame itself: • two children on the bench, with footboards • one adult passenger with backrest • a rear basket with bag, or a caboose rail • the shopping, strapped down 440 lb total, everything included. Rider, passengers and cargo together.

Two batteries, one decision to make

The Flux comes with a 15Ah battery (720Wh) or a 25Ah battery (1200Wh). Everything else about the bike is identical — same motor, same frame, same deck.

Take the 15Ah if your rides are the school run and the shops: 55 miles is far more than a week of that. Take the 25Ah if you carry a passenger most days, ride hills, or would rather charge once a week than twice. A loaded cargo bike uses noticeably more energy than an empty one, and that is exactly when the bigger pack earns its keep.

Who the Flux is for

Buy it if

  • You need to carry children, a passenger, or a full shop — regularly, not occasionally.
  • You want the carrying deck built into the frame rather than bolted on.
  • You want to step through the frame instead of swinging a leg over a loaded bike.
  • You would use it instead of a second car for short trips.

Look elsewhere if

  • You need it to fold — the Rebel 2 folds and also steps through.
  • You carry only bags, never people — the Runabout 2 is shorter and easier to park.
  • You ride rough ground — the Cougar has front and rear suspension.
  • You want maximum range — the Cheetah 2 Pro carries 1440Wh.

In the box

  • Flux cargo electric bike, largely assembled
  • 48V Samsung battery in the capacity you chose, and its charger
  • Two keys for the battery lock
  • Front and rear fenders, front and rear lights, rear rack — all fitted
  • Pedals, front wheel, handlebar hardware and the tools to fit them
  • Manual and certification paperwork

The passenger seat pad, backrest, handlebar for a passenger, front basket, rear basket with bag and the caboose rail are sold separately. If you plan to carry someone on the first ride, fit the seat pad and the footboards before you set off, not at the roadside.

Flux questions, answered

Can the Flux really carry two children?

Yes, within the limits: 180 lb on the rear deck and 440 lb total including you. Two children on the bench with the seat pad and the fold-out footboards is the normal set-up. Check your local rules first — carrying passengers on an electric bike is not permitted everywhere, and where it is there are usually conditions on age and footrests.

How far does it go on one charge?

Up to 55 miles on the 15Ah battery under the manufacturer's test conditions. Loaded with a passenger and riding hills, plan on considerably less — a cargo bike carrying 150 lb of passengers uses far more energy than an empty one. The 25Ah battery holds two thirds more energy for the same weight of riding.

What is the difference between the 15Ah and the 25Ah?

Only the battery. 720Wh against 1200Wh, on the same motor, frame and deck. The 25Ah is the one to take if you carry a passenger most days or would rather charge once a week.

Is it Class 2 or Class 3?

Both — you select it. Class 2 tops out at 20 mph with a throttle; Class 3 goes to 28 mph on pedal assist. Set it to whatever your local law and your route allow. Many places that permit Class 2 on shared paths do not permit Class 3.

How long is it, and will it fit in my garage?

72 inches, which is about a foot longer than a normal bike. It stands on its own kickstand and does not need more width, only more length. Measure before you buy if you park in a narrow hallway.

Can shorter riders manage it?

The frame suits riders from 4 ft 11 in to 6 ft 2 in, and the handlebar adjusts through nearly five inches of height. The step-through frame means you never have to lift a leg over a loaded bike. It weighs 99 lb though, so it is not a bike you carry up stairs.

Does it fold?

No. The Flux is a rigid long-tail frame, which is what allows the 180 lb deck rating. If you need a fold, look at the Rebel 2.

Can I buy it with a second bike?

Yes. The Flux with the Rebel 2 and the Flux with the Runabout 2 ship as one order, at a lower price than buying the two separately.
