Ships in the box with your bike. Nothing to add to your cart.

The Roots Rider Rebel 2 is a folding, step-through electric bike on 20 x 4-inch fat tires. It folds at the frame and the stem in under a minute, fits in a car boot, and steps through low enough to get on in a skirt or a suit. It is our most popular bike and our most forgiving one: the easiest to store, the easiest to mount, and the easiest to live with.

You step through it, you do not climb on it

The top tube drops away completely. You walk into the frame rather than swinging a leg over the back, which is the single reason most of our older riders, shorter riders and riders carrying something choose this bike over anything else in the range.

The upright position puts your weight on the saddle instead of your wrists. On a 45-minute ride that difference is the whole ride.

How the fold works

Four movements, no tools, about forty seconds once you have done it twice.

Folded, the Rebel 2 fits in the boot of an estate car or an SUV, in a boat locker, in a caravan, or in a cupboard by the front door. Two of them fit across the back of most SUVs.

Where the folding actually matters

Flats without a lift. Apartment blocks with a bike-theft problem. Boats. Camper vans. Offices that will not let you leave a bike in the corridor. A train, then the last two miles.

It is heavy for a folding bike, because it has a fat-tire frame and a 720Wh battery. Take the battery out before you lift it and it becomes a great deal easier.

What 60 miles actually means

The 60-mile figure is the manufacturer's, measured on the lowest assist, on the flat, with a light rider. Here is a more useful picture of the same 720Wh battery.

Who the Rebel 2 is for

Buy it if

  • You need to store it somewhere small, or lift it into a car.
  • You want to step through rather than swing a leg over.
  • You are between about 4 ft 11 in and 6 ft 2 in.
  • You want a rear rack that takes a crate, panniers or a child seat.
  • You want the least expensive way into a proper fat-tire e-bike.

Look elsewhere if

  • You ride 30 miles a day — the Rebel 2 Pro has 80 miles and more torque.
  • You want 28 mph — the Cheetah 2 is Class 3.
  • You ride rough trails — the Cougar has dual suspension.
  • You carry a passenger daily — the Runabout 2 has a 100 lb rack.

In the box

  • Rebel 2 folding electric bike, about 85% assembled
  • 48V 15Ah Samsung battery and charger
  • Two keys for the battery lock
  • Pedals, front wheel, handlebar hardware and the tools to fit them
  • Manual and UL certification paperwork

Unfold it, fit the front wheel, screw on the pedals, set the saddle height, check the brakes, charge it fully. Most people are riding inside an hour.

Rebel 2 questions, answered

How small does the Rebel 2 fold?

It folds at the frame hinge and at the stem, small enough for a car boot, the back of an SUV, a boat locker or a hall cupboard. Two of them fit across the back of most SUVs. Take the battery out first and it is noticeably lighter to lift.

How far can it go on one charge?

The 48V 15Ah Samsung battery is rated for up to 60 miles of pedal assist under the manufacturer's test conditions. On mixed riding at a middle assist level, plan on 34 to 42 miles.

Is the Rebel 2 good for a shorter rider?

Yes. The step-through frame means you walk into it rather than swinging a leg over, and the seat post adjusts over a wide range. It suits riders from around 4 ft 11 in upwards, which is why it is the bike we recommend most often to shorter riders.

Can it carry a passenger or a child seat?

The frame is rated for up to 400 lb of total payload and the rear rack accepts a passenger seat and a backrest, sold separately. Check your local rules on carrying passengers before you do.

How fast does it go?

Up to 20 mph on the throttle. It is a Class 2 electric bike, which is the class allowed on the widest range of paths and trails in the US.

Is the battery certified?

Yes. The bike carries UL 2849 certification and the battery carries UL 2271. Charge it indoors on a hard surface, use the supplied charger, and do not leave it charging unattended overnight.

Can I leave it outside?

Occasional rain is fine. Storing it outdoors permanently is not: water finds the connectors and the salt in coastal air finds the bolts. Bring it in, which is the point of a bike that folds.
