The Roots Rider Cougar is a moped-style electric bike with front and rear suspension, a long bench saddle and 20 x 4-inch fat tires. It is the bike in our range built to leave the tarmac: gravel, fire roads, kerbs, forest tracks, and the kind of ground that rattles a rigid e-bike apart. It also seats two.

Dual suspension is not a styling detail

A fat tire absorbs small chatter. It does nothing about a pothole, a kerb, a root or a washboard fire road — that energy goes into the frame, then into you.

The Cougar has a sprung fork at the front and a shock at the back, both with adjustable preload. Soften them for comfort on broken tarmac, firm them up when you are carrying a passenger. It is the difference between finishing a two-hour ride and cutting it short.

Two up, properly

The bench saddle is long enough for a passenger, and the 350 lb payload is set with two people in mind. Fit the footrest pegs so your passenger has somewhere to put their feet, firm up the rear preload, and it behaves.

Check your local rules first: carrying a passenger on an electric bike is legal in most US states and restricted in some.

Who the Cougar is for

Buy it if

  • Your route includes gravel, fire roads, kerbs or broken tarmac.
  • You want to carry a passenger without buying a cargo bike.
  • You want moped looks and bicycle rules.
  • You value comfort over outright range.

Look elsewhere if

  • You need to fold or store it small — the Rebel 2 folds.
  • You want the longest range — the Cheetah 2 Pro carries 1440Wh.
  • You want 38 mph and a 60V system — that is the Cougar Pro.
  • You want the lowest step-over — the Runabout 2 is 13.8 in.

In the box

  • Cougar electric bike, about 85% assembled
  • 1040Wh removable battery and charger
  • Two keys for the battery lock
  • Pedals, front wheel, handlebar hardware and the tools to fit them
  • Manual and UL certification paperwork

Passenger footrest pegs, the front basket and the rear rack are sold separately.

Cougar questions, answered

How far can the Cougar go on one charge?

The 1040Wh battery is rated for up to 80 miles of pedal assist under the manufacturer's test conditions. On mixed ground at a middle assist level, plan on 45 to 55 miles. Riding two-up will cut that further.

Can two people ride the Cougar?

Yes. The long bench saddle and the 350 lb payload are designed for it. Fit the passenger footrest pegs so your passenger has somewhere to put their feet, and check that carrying a passenger is legal where you ride.

Is the Cougar good off-road?

It has front and rear suspension on 20 x 4.0-inch tires, which is what lets it take fire roads, gravel and kerbs. It is not a downhill mountain bike, but it handles rough ground far better than a rigid e-bike.

What is the difference between the Cougar and the Cougar Pro?

The Pro runs a 60V system with a 1200Wh battery and 1600W peak output, for up to 38 mph instead of 34 mph. Frame, suspension and tires are the same.

Does the Cougar have anti-theft tracking?

There is a compartment moulded into the frame sized for an Apple AirTag. The AirTag itself is not included. It is a recovery aid, not a lock — use a proper lock as well.

How do I set the suspension?

Start with the preload backed off for comfort. If the rear feels like it is bottoming out over bumps, or you are carrying a passenger or a loaded rack, wind the preload in a few turns and try again.

Is it certified?

Yes. UL 2849 for the bike and UL 2271 for the battery.
